Clayton History 101
This community was originally built along a road cut by Governor Tryon’s troops in 1770.
One hundred years later, when the railroad came through the area, the community was given its first name: Stallings’ Station. That’s because the depot for the NC Railroad was in the home of Mrs. Sarah Stallings.
The name only lasted for three years, however, before it was changed to Clayton. The town was officially incorporated in 1869.
Today, this community is home to many residents who enjoy the town’s close proximity to the Research Triangle Area as well as major cities like Raleigh.
