The name comes from two communities. Frenchman William Fuquay settled one section of the community while J.D. “Squire” Ballentine settled the other section of the future community and named it Varina after a woman he had regular correspondence with.
The two communities of Fuquay Springs and Varina ultimately merged in 1963 to form the modern town.
