Raleigh, NC: A Capital City With Plenty to Offer

First founded in the 1700s, the City of Oaks is an incredible place to live, work and play in our great state of North Carolina.

Occupying more than 142.9 square miles, this city boasts a population of more than 430,000 residents, many of whom work within the city limits. That’s because this city, which is the seat of Wake County, has a diverse job sector that particularly celebrates such industries as education, healthcare and politics.

Named for Sir Walter Raleigh (the man who established the lost Roanoke Colony in present-day Dare County), this community is truly one of a kind. No wonder it’s considered one of the fastest growing cities in the country!

A Little Background on Raleigh

Wake County was first formed in 1771 using portions of Cumberland, Orange and Johnston Counties. The county was named for Margaret Wake Tryon, who was the wife of Governor William Tryon.

Raleigh was chosen as the site of the new state capital in 1788 because of its central location. Over the years, Raleigh has, understandably, had an important part in history. For instance, the first state fair was held near the city in 1853.

And during the Civil War, Raleigh was captured by Union cavalry under the command of General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick.

Today, this community is known for its preserved natural areas, it’s thriving and diverse jobs market, it’s commitment to higher education and its importance as a political epicenter.

The Neighborhoods of Raleigh

Raleigh has the distinction of being one of the earlier planned cities in the United States.

This community was originally laid out on a grid pattern and then spread out from there. Residents today highly appreciate this intuitive layout that is not necessarily found in other North Carolina cities.

Thus, it’s easy to discern the unique historic neighborhoods that comprise Raleigh.

Then, in the 2000s, the Downtown Raleigh Alliance led an effort to separate this section of the city into five smaller districts:

  • Fayetteville Street
  • Moore Square
  • Glenwood South
  • Warehouse (Raleigh)
  • Capital District

Job Opportunity At Every Turn in Raleigh

Generally speaking, Raleigh’s industrial base includes such industries as:

  • Banking/Financial services
  • Electrical
  • Medical
  • Electronic
  • Clothing and apparel
  • Food Processing
  • Pharmaceuticals

Raleigh is also one point of the Research Triangle, the name given to the three cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. The name came from the creation of the Research Triangle Park in 1959. The facility, which is located in Durham and Wake Counties, is partway between the three cities and their universities.

This prime location means that Raleigh is known for attracting higher-level intellectual jobs to the area.

And did you know? Raleigh has the distinction of being number three on the 2013 Forbes List of one of the best places for businesses and careers?
