Wake Forest: From a University Town to a Thriving Wake County Community

Don’t let its name fool you: Wake Forest University is not located in Wake Forest, NC.

It’s one of the quirky facts that residents in this community have come to know and love.

Still, even though there’s no longer a university within town limits, this community has plenty to offer interested home buyers like you!

A Look Back at Wake Forest’s History

Located in Wake County (with a small portion in Franklin County), Wake Forest was first settled by Dr. Calvin Jones from New England in 1820.

Jones purchased 615 acres, which was later sold to the North Carolina Baptist Convention in order to start Wake Forest College.

In 1880, the community was incorporated as the Town of Wake Forest College and later, the town of Wake Forest.

Although Wake Forest University was located in the town for 122 years, it later moved to Winston-Salem in 1956.

Today, this community has a population of more than 30,000 residents, which is a significant jump from the 12,500 people that lived there in 2000.

In fact, Forbes Magazine recognized Wake Forest as the 20th fastest growing suburb in the nation in 2007.
